"Hands up" for abolition of corporal punishment

Social Activities and Practices Institute started the project "Hands up: promoting the effective abolition of corporal punishment against children (HandsUp - Promoting The Effective Elimination of Corporal Punishment Against Children)", funded by the European Commission in partnership with leading organizations from Portugal, Spain, Germany and Greece.

Why this project?

It has been shown that corporal, punishment, exists in several ways and it's still socially acceptable. Therefore, and in line with international recommendations, the forbiddance of all corporal punishment must be followed by a correct application and enforcement of the law. It is important to demystify and clarify the concept of corporal punishment and all of its consequences, and also promote the adoption of positive discipline practices.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Increase cooperation, planning and capacity of diferent public agencies to address corporal punishment against children effectively;
  • Promote the adoption of positive discipline practices among parents and caregivers;
  • Raise community awareness of the need to eliminate corporal punishment against children.

  • Development of National Action Plans on forbidding corporal punishment against children
  • Creation of a Working Group of Child Protection Experts
  • National Policy dialogue meetings
  • Training courses for Justice, Child Protection, Social, Education, and Health professionals;
  • Training courses to Parents and Soon-to-be Parents and Caregivers
  • Parent Meetings - “Tea Talks”
  • Awareness campaignVideo and Exhibitions
  • Coaching for parents: HandsUP APP and Forum.
